My research interests lie at the intersection of social media, social studies, and social justice, with a particular concern for students who are vulnerable or marginalized. In particular, I research the ways in which social media can be used within educational contexts in ways that promote equity and inclusion, particularly of voices that often go unheard. This research has included examining a Facebook application for its usefulness for first-generation college students as well as my dissertation, which examined high school teachers’ use of Twitter for civic education. In addition to this scholarship, I research issues of spirituality and school culture which prepare students to inherit democracy, as well as the ways in which social media is used by alt-right groups.
